West San Jose - Campbell Lions Club sponsored a Diabetes Education Project
West San Jose - Campbell Lions Club sponsored a Diabetes Education Project at Educational Options at the Fremont Union High School with a financial grant from the California Lions Foundation and City of Hope. Students cooked a diabetes healthy meal, learned from Diabetes educators, and went home with a bag full of ingredients to make the same meal for their families.
The Fremont Union High School District offers various programs through Educational Options to meet the needs of all students. The mission of Educational Options is to provide an individualized pathway to success for every student.
The diabetes educators were nurses Desi Mehrabian, RN and Mary Hallum, RN that volunteer with Lions on the AJ Robinson Health Van, a program of District 4-C6. Lion Lucie Mueller, a retired RN, works with them and invited them to participate in the event. They obtained printed information and flyers from Santa Clara County Health Department and other content that was used at the event. Each student took home a packet of information to share with their family.
Here are the event statistics:
9 volunteers from Lions and the community at large over two class shifts of 2 hours each
30 Students learned about diabetes and learned how to prepare and cook a diabetes school
Diabetes information was taken home to the students families
30 bags of food were given to the students so that they could cook a diabetes healthy meal for their families
More than 120 people were served
The West San Jose - Campbell Lions Club appreciates the generosity of The California Lions Foundation and City of Hope and look forward to working on other projects.
