Almaden Lions Club providing vision & hearing screenings to students with help from CLF
For the last 5 years Almaden Lions Club has been providing vision screenings to students of 4 different school districts. Each of these school districts have between 6 and 19 schools. Our district has four spot vision screeners and this has been adequate. Our district does vision screening for over 14,000 students each year.
Our Club was asked last year to help with Hearing screening in one school. This was the first time we preformed screening in the schools for hearing on that scale (250 students). District 4C-6 has two hearing units and we were able to screen the students with the two units.
The challenge was to keep the room quiet enough to conduct the hearing screenings. The units that our district has are designed to be used in a hearing room and do not have the noise cancelling headphones. This year we provided hearing screening for one School District with nine schools. This again was a struggle but we were able to accomplish the task screening 1502 students for hearing. Because of the success we had this year in this one school district we have been asked to provide hearing screening to another school district. It was therefore necessary for us to upgrade and expand our equipment.
California Lions Foundation began giving out grants, which Almaden Lions applied for. We had the funds to purchase two hearing units with noise cancelling headsets, but thanks to the CLF grant, Almaden was able to purchase 4 hearing units. Which is the amount we needed in order to perform the hearing tests in an efficient manner. So far this year, Almaden Lions has screened 6 schools in the Cambrian Park School District and a total of 1345 students.
We would like to sincerely thank California Lions Foundation for providing the grant to allow us to purchase the additional hearing units that we needed. This equipment helps us to provide an efficient service to our local school children.
